Clear your vision of the outcome
Any situation in which you have to exert influence is likely to result in a desired outcome. You might want a re-grading or salary increase, promotion, new job, additional resources, support for a proposal, and so forth. The foundation of influence is clarity about what you want.

Plan your approach
Without planning ahead, you greatly increase your chances of failing rather than succeeding in a situation you are trying influence. Consider these two questions:
- What are the best ways to make your business succeed?
- What could possibly stop you from succeeding?
After answering these questions, you can begin to plan the strategies you’ll use.
Consider yourself as the other person.
This is an easy but powerful strategy that can make a huge impact on the lives of those you wish to influence. To put it another way, think about what you would do if you were the one being influenced instead of the influencer.
There are times in our lives when we have to make an impact. You can influence by being clear, using informal channels, trust building, planning your approach, standing in the shoes of others, and building trust.
